South Lake Tahoe, California

South Lake Tahoe, the largest city on wonderful Lake Tahoe, is located about 100 km south of Reno and about 300 km northeast of San Francisco.
Lake Tahoe is located between the states of Nevada and California, at a height of almost 1900 meters against the majestic mountain backdrop of the Sierra Nevada.
The two states meet on the southern shore of the lake, where the high casino hotels in Nevada meet the Heavenly ski area in California. As the largest mountain lake in North America, it is known for its crystal-clear water and as a year-round travel destination.
South Lake Tahoe has the largest number of hotels and restaurants compared to other locations on the lake. Visit the many restaurants and look forward to a culinary variety, all-you-can-eat buffets, bars with a lake view, and numerous family-friendly restaurants. Due to its beautiful landscape, Emerald Bay is one of the most photographed places in the world.

In summer, Lake Tahoe offers many outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, rock climbing and horse riding. The extensive sandy shores are reminiscent of ocean beaches and offer the best conditions for families. The varied water sports offer includes various motor boat trips, kayaking, sailing, parasailing, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, water skiing and even diving trips. Famous artists such as Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars also provide atmospheric outdoor concerts in summer.

In winter, three large ski areas await you at Lake Tahoe: Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe.
The Heavenly Mountain Resort is one of the best ski resorts in the USA and also the highest located on Lake Tahoe, with unique panoramic views of the lake. As an alternative to skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating, dog sledding, cross-state skiing, snowshoeing and sledding are also offered here. Anglers can enjoy ice fishing in the winter months.
The Kirkwood Mountain Resort is known for one of the highest average snowfalls (approx. 1200 cm) and a large selection of advanced ski areas. The mountain has a ridge line of 3.2 km at the top. This makes Kirkwood popular for cliff drops and cornices.
The Sierra-at-Tahoe, a mid-sized ski and snowboard resort in Twin Bridges, is known for its heavy annual snowfall and family-friendly vacation spot. The ski area consists of 25 percent beginners, 50 percent advanced skiers and 25 percent professional skiers.

Highlights in South Lake Tahoe

  • Emerald Bay The shimmering green, turquoise and blue crown jewel of Lake Tahoe on the west bank of the lake.
  • Zephyr Cove Beach
A kilometer long sandy beach which offers many opportunities for fun and relaxation in the sun.
  • Heavenly Village
Over 40 unique shops and restaurants offer a great mix of national and local brands.
  • Eagle Falls Trails
The Eagle Falls Trail has one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
  • Vikingsholm
