The jewel of the south
Savannah, with its 22 picturesque squares, around which dreamlike villas and ancient oak trees are lined up, is certainly a “jewel of the south” and one of the most beautiful cities in the USA. On December 21, 1864, General Sherman delivered Savannah in a legendary telegram intact as a “Christmas gift” to President Lincoln, because his “March to the sea” ended there at the end of the Civil War. Savannah has one of the oldest and largest historic colonial neighborhoods and more than 800 historic houses give the city a unique charm.
