Rockford, Illinois

In northern Illinois, Rockford is a real gem among American cities. Rockford welcomes its visitors with a mix of history and scenic and artistic highlights. Peoria, Illinois

With around 190,000 inhabitants, Peoria is by far the largest city in the Great Rivers State. Its boardwalk on the banks of the Illinois River is one of the region’s most popular attractions. In addition to very good restaurants, galleries and many boutiques, there is also the Peoria Riverfront Museum right on the water. With its regularly changing exhibitions from the fields of history, science and art, it is one of the most exciting museums in the Midwest. In addition to the exciting “digital planetarium”, the latest cinema blockbusters will also be presented on the huge 3D screen, which is also located here.

Don’t miss a trip on the Spirit of Peoria. This paddle steamer, which is a replica of a real ship from the 19th century, travels the Illinois River on one to five day tours. Line music will entertain you as the craft moves across the river. Wildlife Prairie State Park is very close to Peoria. This conservation area is home to more than 150 animals that originally lived in Illinois but have been displaced by the advance of humans. Bison, wolf, black bear, moose and even cougars can be seen here.

Did you know that Caterpillar, the world’s largest manufacturer of construction equipment, is based in Peoria? In October 2012 the Caterpillar Visitors Center was opened, which gives you a look into the history of the company with many photos and antique equipment and in which you can take a close look at a 7 meter high mine truck.

If you prefer nature, we recommend visiting the Peoria Heights, from which you can see up to 30 kilometers into the Illinois River Valley. Afterwards, it’s worth a trip on the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway, which connects more than 100 wonderful destinations. The 140-mile route, in the middle of which is Peoria, offers pure nature and numerous opportunities for activities such as B. canoeing, bicycle tours or hiking.

Galena, Illinois

Only about three hours’ drive from Chicago is one of the most charming towns in the United States on the river: Galena. The picturesque backdrop of the Galena River, which meanders through the town and romantic wineries to the Mississippi, exudes an incomparable charm.
