New York

New York or State of New York is a state in the northeast of the United States. The largest and most famous city in the state is New York City. The capital is Albany. New York is divided into Upstate and Downstate New York. Upstate New York is the state north of New York. Downstate New York is made up of Long Island and New York City.

Immigrants and displaced persons – a story always has two sides

When the European settlers arrived, most of the Indians who lived here were expelled. Most of them are exterminated or now live in other places, only the Iroquois still live here today.

The state was founded as a Dutch colony until 1664 the area was annexed by the English crown.

In 1788 New York became the eleventh state to join the thirteen states of the American Union. Over time, New York City developed more and more into a large immigrant city and metropolis.

In 1886 the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City. As a gift from France to the USA, it was intended to demonstrate the ties between the two countries. After the events of September 11, 2001, the Statue of Liberty was closed for a long time. Since summer 2009 it has been open to visitors again.

Appalachians, Hudson and Long Island – something for everyone

The state of New York borders the Lake of Ontario to the west. From the interior of the country, the Ontario River flows east into the ocean.

One of the most famous areas of New York is Long Island. Many vacationers come here every summer to enjoy the beaches, the sea and the sun.

Most tourists and visitors are drawn to New York City, not the surrounding area. But there is at least as much to discover here.

Many state parks are dedicated to beautiful nature and scenery. The parks are not only concerned with nature but also with the history of the region. Many monuments, museums and trails are dedicated to the history of the Indian tribes who once lived here.

Famous parks are for example the Catskill Park and the Montauk Point Park. The Niagara Falls lie on the border with Ontario ( Canada ). The water plunges 58 meters into the depths and creates a tremendous rush.
