From small towns to big cities like Minneapolis or St Paul, there’s something for everyone in Minnesota! The Mississippi River begins in Itasca State Park, where it is formed by the confluence of the Headwaters and Rainy Rivers. The Mississippi River is a popular destination for recreational activities such as fishing for walleye or paddling through its shallow rapids. The Minnesota River is another major waterway in Minnesota that begins near Big Stone Lake before flowing generally southeastward until it empties into the Mississippi River near Fort Snelling State Park. Along its course it passes through several towns including Granite Falls and Mankato. The Minnesota River supports a variety of recreation activities such as fishing for catfish or northern pike or paddling through its shallow rapids. Wildlife along this river includes bald eagles, osprey and beavers as well as several species of waterfowl such as Canada geese and mallards. The Minnesota also provides important habitat for several endangered species such as piping plover and least tern. In addition to providing recreational opportunities for visitors to enjoy nature’s beauty along this scenic waterway; it also serves an important role in supporting local economies by providing irrigation water for agricultural production throughout the region.
